Repetition

Sometimes during taekwondo class you may feel like you are repeating the same thing over and over again. You may practice your form many times, or even practice one single move many times. We as humans get bored easily and you may question what the point is. Or wonder why you are doing the same thing on repeat.

Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” The only way to become a master at something is to practice it until it becomes like second nature. You should be able to perform that single move at any moment’s notice to such perfection that someone thinks you have been practicing it your whole life. In truth, you have just practiced it 10,000 times.

When boredom strikes it’s important to remember why you started in the first place. Is your goal to be able to defend yourself? Is it to get in shape? Maybe it is to become a State or World Champion. Maybe it’s to become a Master. Whatever the case, you will only get there through consistency and repetition.

There is always room for improvement. Whether you are a white belt or a Master, there is always something you can do better. Martial Arts training is a lifelong journey and there are a million different things you can do or try. To master any of these techniques you have to spend hours, weeks, months, and even years to get it just right. It can take an entire lifetime.

Don’t let that knowledge defeat you! Martial Arts training is so much more than just mastering moves. You can find fun and challenge in the entire process. Most importantly, it shapes you into the person that you are meant to be. It gives you the skills to persevere towards your goals even when you get bored of the repetition. It teaches you to practice until you master whatever goal you wish you achieve.
At Mueller’s Martial Arts, we teach more than kicking and punching. We teach our students to be true Martial Artists, not just accepting moves that are subpar. Our goal is to create champions, Black Belts, and Masters. To learn more about our program, click here.
