Getting Through Winter

Winter is a struggle. Am I right? This time of year is especially difficult with cold weather, sickness, isolation, and less sunny days. While many people just trudge through the winter season looking forward to better days, what if this year was different? Mueller’s Martial Arts want to challenge you to see this time of year as an opportunity to find joy in the moment. Did you know that taekwondo can help you have something to not only get you through winter, but also something to look forward to.

Getting out of the House:

We know that when it’s cold outside all you want to do is to stay inside and watch TV or play video games. But the truth of the matter is that doing so is not good for your mental and physical health. By having a set routine of going to taekwondo consistently, you get out of the house and do something that benefits every aspect of your life. While it may seem like there is not a lot to do in the winter, Martial Arts is always there with tournaments, testing, and just coming to class. Plus it’s indoors and warm which is an extra added bonus. So next time you’re thinking, “I don’t want to do anything today”, get in your car and come to taekwondo. We promise you’ll be glad you did.

Community:

Winter can come with a lot of isolation. During warmer months we are getting out and socializing, during winter we are primarily focused on our immediate surroundings. Socialization plays a huge role in mental and physical health, and being part of an amazing community can get you through the winter blues. At Mueller’s Martial Arts we love our taekwondo family, full of support and friendship. Everyone is there to cheer you on and support you through your journey in life. Sometimes the best way to get through hard days is with the support of others.

Exercise:

Most people started the new year wanting to exercise more or be more active or get healthier. Taekwondo is a fun way to get in an amazing workout that not only gets you sweating but teaches you practical application and use. In addition, exercise is scientifically proven to release chemicals in our body that help us feel good. So when you are feeling down in the winter one of the best things you can do for yourself is to come to class and sweat it out. You may regret not doing a workout, but you’ll never regret doing one.

Goals:

Remember those goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the year? They’re still there! Whatever goal you set for yourself may have already fallen by the wayside, but that’s one of the best things about Martial Arts training. There is always a new goal to work towards. Whether it’s a higher rank, winning a tournament, or mastering a move- you always have something to strive towards. Unlike many other resolutions, in karate we give real, actionable, and achievable ways to reach those goals in set periods of time. If you want to accomplish any sort of goal, whether that be physical or mental, taekwondo is a great place to start!

Let’s beat the winter blues together by training at Mueller’s Martial Arts! Winter doesn’t have to be a bad time of year. It can be the time you use to set yourself up for future success while enjoying the ride! To learn more about our program, click here.

Pride in Your Accomplishments

We live in a world where it’s very much go, go, go and there is never a moment to look back at what you just did. When we achieve a goal it’s immediately onto the next one. We tend to be hard on ourselves when we feel like we are not where we should or want to be. It’s easy to get lost in the always striving mentality which can be great for working hard, but it can also cause a lot of pressure and anxiety.

We hope at Mueller’s Martial Arts, you take a moment to look back and realize all that you have accomplished. You put in weeks, months, and even years of hard work to get exactly where you are right now. Was it perfect? Probably not. But you continued to show up every single day with the determination to get better. That in itself is a difficult feat to accomplish. Many people don’t even try in the first place and you did. You kept going.

Starting as a white belt isn’t an easy thing. You took the brave first step to make a better life for yourself. If you are a black belt or even Grandmaster you should be proud. You kept moving forward even on the days you wanted to quit. If you got your black belt and kept going after that, you should be especially proud. You showed that there is no end to training.

Maybe you’ve had failures and setbacks. That’s okay, they’re a part of life. If you set out last year to win a State or World Championship title and didn’t come close, that’s okay. Guess what? You still made it to State or World’s. That took so much hard work and dedication to get there and you stuck with it. If you are going to try again this year, you should be proud of that too.

I want you to take a moment and look back at all that you accomplished in the last year. If you are a parent of a taekwondo student, you do it too. Look back at all that your child accomplished. Now tell them you’re proud of them. Be specific. Same goes for you- the Martial Artist that is reading this. Think about all the moments that you pushed yourself last year to get where you are now.

We want you to know at Mueller’s Martial Arts that we are so incredibly proud of you. Each and every one of our students puts forth their best foot on a daily basis and continues to work to get better. We are proud of the parents that encourage their kids, the families that train together, and the people that stepped into the dojang one day and decided they weren’t going to quit. We are so proud of you and we hope you are proud of yourself too!

Next Level Instructor Program

Invites went out last week to our Next Level Instructor Program! This program is a comprehensive training program created by Chief Master and Master Horn designed to shape the best instructors in the National Martial Arts Alliance. While Mueller’s Martial Arts already has several amazing assistant instructors, this will broaden the invites to people of all ranks and ages to join the instructor team.

The program teaches students everything they need to learn all the way from assisting in class to owning their own school someday. Having a rewarding and viable career option at a young age empowers them to have confidence about their bright future. Students earn collars along the way to show their progress as they go along. Mr. Mueller is the highest rank at black collar, and Tye and Santi just below him at blue collar. That means that they have the skills to run the entire school on their own and know the necessary skills to run classes.

The program is far more than just creating instructors however. It teaches students life skills necessary for success in life like leadership and public speaking. They are trained how to stand in front of other people and teach others things that they know. This skillset is essential for any future leaders in the world and is great to start at a young age.

These life skills continue to be beneficial through the students’ entire lives. It will help them succeed in any path that they decide to take whether that may be opening their own school or going to college and starting a career. It can even be both! The possibilities are endless for students that join the next level program because they will be set up for a bright and open future with the skills that they need to succeed.

Students that were invited to partake in the next level program were students that showed interest in teaching and leadership skills in class. They are students who not only show up for their own classes, but go above and beyond in their willingness to help others and have a drive to become teachers in taekwondo. Like with many other things in life, they had to prove their willingness to take their training to the next level.
Next level instructor classes will take the place of elevated/inventive classes that were previously held on Wednesday nights. To learn more about Mueller’s Martial Arts, click here.

Back from Break

We all love breaks! The two weeks off between Christmas and New Year is a time for rejuvenation, spending time with family, and having fun. But once it’s over it’s time to get back on track. A new year meant a fresh start for everyone. It’s time to revitalize your energy for your Martial Arts practice!

We know that coming back from break can be challenging. It’s hard to not sit on the couch watching TV or playing video games all day! The best thing you can do for yourself is to get back into the dojang and focus on your goals for the year. Set clear intentions and a plan on how you want to get there!

Get back to class:

The first step to getting back on track is to come to class. It may be hard at first, but once you start showing up consistently again you will get back into the habit of things and it will be like you never took a break! Coming in at least two days a week will get your best results and make the transition even easier.

Have a goal:

What goals do you have this year for taekwondo? Is it to win a World Championship? Is it to earn your Black Belt? Is it to get in better shape? To learn how to defend yourself? Whatever it may be, set a clear goal and focus each of your days on it. Work towards that goal every single time you step onto the floor. Having a goal is having a reason to show up for yourself and if the goal is powerful enough, you won’t quit until you achieve it.

Discipline over motivation:

We all start the new year with big plans and goals. The reality is that many people lose motivation by February and give up. That’s where discipline comes in. You will not have motivation everyday but if you can have discipline you can achieve anything you set your mind to. The best part? We teach and work on discipline in taekwondo training so you don’t even have to feel like you are on your own. We are here to help you every step of the way.

Get excited:

I want to challenge you to get excited about Martial Arts again. Maybe it’s getting to see your friends you have made in classes. Maybe it’s challenging and pushing yourself to new levels. Maybe it’s the chance to become better every single day. Whatever the case may be, get excited about training because the possibilities are endless to what you can achieve if you put in the hard work and show up for yourself every day.
At Mueller’s Martial Arts, we are so excited to start 2024 with you! We are here to provide you support and training to help you achieve any goal you set in life. We can’t wait to see you back at the dojang! To learn more about our program, click here.

The Gift of Taekwondo

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! While many people are excited about getting a break from school or taking time off work, we are still so excited about taekwondo! We know that you probably have a big list of gifts of people that you want to give presents to this year, probably full of things that they don’t need. In our opinion, the best gift you can give is the gift of taekwondo.

Classes:

If you have a friend or family member that you want to give an life experience to, give them the gift of Martial Arts classes. We teach discipline, integrity, goals, focus, respect, perseverance, confidence, and attitude in each and every class. Our goal is to not only get our students into great shape physically, but also mentally as well. By teaching life skills they learn to become the best versions of themselves each and everyday, and carry that in their lives at school and at home.

For the family:

Parents- don’t forget about yourselves! While we do teach your kids everything they need to succeed in life, taekwondo training is actually an amazing gift for you too! With our family program you can train alongside your child. Families that train together stay together. Not only that, but it’s a great way to get in shape, improve memory and attitude, as well as a fun and exciting challenge. We teach you to defend yourself in any situation while looking awesome doing it!

Gifts to give:

Students already enrolled in Martial Arts can benefit from the gift of taekwondo too! If you’ve had your eye on a new weapon, sparring gear, a high end uniform, or anything else we offer through the NMAA, now is the time to get it. It’s amazing how excited you and your child will get about training when they receive something special to use in class.

Mueller’s Martial Arts is currently offering an amazing holiday promotion- 4 weeks and a uniform all for FREE. Invite your friends and family or yourself to get into class today. We also are doing 10% off all orders placed from the holiday catalog. Now is the time to get some awesome new gear for the holidays! We love this time of year and wait to celebrate with you!

Thanksgiving Gratitude

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is already tomorrow? It feels like this year is just flying by! This time of year is a season of reflection, to show those we love that we care about them. Most importantly, it’s time to remember all that you are thankful for and show some gratitude. At Mueller’s Martial Arts, we are grateful for you!

To the NMAA:

Our studio would not be where it is without the National Martial Arts Alliance. As part of the organization, we are lucky to get to train with some of the best Martial Artists in the world. Master and Chief Master Horn are incredible leaders who provide us with the forms we learn, instructor certifications, tournaments, and everything in between. We are proud to be members of the NMAA alongside the others in this great organization.

To our instructors:

We could not do what we do without our instructors. They lead our classes every single day and teach us everything we need to know in taekwondo. They are there for us when we are down and hold us accountable when we need it. They are the backbone of Mueller’s Martial Arts and without them there would be no dojang! We want to thank Mr. Mueller, Mr. Lujan, Tye Pearce, Soren Pearce, Cameron Christner, and Oliver Mjolizdk.

To our parents:

We have THE BEST parents at Muller’s Martial Arts. They are always supportive and go above and beyond the call of duty. Not only do they have awesome kiddos, but they show up in ways that are never expected. They are our family, friends, and allies as we strive to create the best possible experience for our students. We are so grateful for our parents!

To our students:

Perhaps most importantly, we are thankful for our students. Let’s be honest, without students there would not be a Mueller’s Martial Arts. Our students are the lifeblood of our school. They show up and put in their best effort to become the greatest versions of themselves. We love to watch our students grow and improve on a daily basis. They are always full of passion, determination, and dedication. They make every hard day worth it, and every good day even better.

It takes a village to have a great taekwondo dojang and we feel like we are the luckiest school in the world! We are so grateful for every single person involved with Mueller’s Martial Arts. We hope you reflect on what you are grateful for and we make your list! Happy Thanksgiving!

Repetition

Sometimes during taekwondo class you may feel like you are repeating the same thing over and over again. You may practice your form many times, or even practice one single move many times. We as humans get bored easily and you may question what the point is. Or wonder why you are doing the same thing on repeat.

Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” The only way to become a master at something is to practice it until it becomes like second nature. You should be able to perform that single move at any moment’s notice to such perfection that someone thinks you have been practicing it your whole life. In truth, you have just practiced it 10,000 times.

When boredom strikes it’s important to remember why you started in the first place. Is your goal to be able to defend yourself? Is it to get in shape? Maybe it is to become a State or World Champion. Maybe it’s to become a Master. Whatever the case, you will only get there through consistency and repetition.

There is always room for improvement. Whether you are a white belt or a Master, there is always something you can do better. Martial Arts training is a lifelong journey and there are a million different things you can do or try. To master any of these techniques you have to spend hours, weeks, months, and even years to get it just right. It can take an entire lifetime.

Don’t let that knowledge defeat you! Martial Arts training is so much more than just mastering moves. You can find fun and challenge in the entire process. Most importantly, it shapes you into the person that you are meant to be. It gives you the skills to persevere towards your goals even when you get bored of the repetition. It teaches you to practice until you master whatever goal you wish you achieve.
At Mueller’s Martial Arts, we teach more than kicking and punching. We teach our students to be true Martial Artists, not just accepting moves that are subpar. Our goal is to create champions, Black Belts, and Masters. To learn more about our program, click here.

Halloween Superheroes (AKA Martial Artists)

Halloween is such a fun time during the year, where we all get to dress up in costumes and trick or treat for candy. It is the one day of the year where we get to pretend to be someone else, whether that is someone we wish to be or someone we admire. Many kids dress up as superheroes because they look up to them. Some kids even dress up as Martial Artists because they think they are cool! The best part is that if you are in taekwondo at Meuller’s Martial Arts, you are already a Martial Artist! Training the way of the fist is the first step to becoming a superhero.

Powerful:

What do we like most about Martial Artists and superheroes that would make us want to dress up as them for Halloween? Well, first and foremost, they can do amazing things. They know how to fight, kicking and punching with incredible speed and ability. They’re able to do that because they train in Martial Arts, often in taekwondo! We teach the same basic principles in every class, to be able to kick and punch and look awesome doing it.

Helping Others:

Superheroes only use their abilities to help others. This is an important part of taekwondo training. We teach our students to only use what they learn in class to defend themselves and others. We never start fights and avoid conflict unless it is completely unavoidable. Control is a huge part of training, we never want to hurt anyone and learning to control those awesome moves is a top priority. They are strong, fast, and powerful, but completely controlled.

Honor:

Martial Artists and superheroes have a major thing in common- they have an honorable and moral metal fortitude that carries them through life. Heroes always do the right thing. In each class we teach our students eight essential life skills that they carry with them throughout their lives. They are respect, integrity, perseverance, attitude, goals, focus, confidence, and discipline. By learning and practicing them in class each day, they take them into their everyday lives. This makes them the best version of themselves, almost like they are a superhero!

Martial Artists and superheroes have many things in common, and those things are great! That’s probably why people like to dress up like them on Halloween! At Mueller’s Martial Arts, we teach kids to become superheroes in their daily lives.

We will have a costume contest during family class this Friday, 10/27 at 4:00pm. Come dressed up in your best costume! The winner will receive a special prize. We look forward to seeing you there!
